It always seems impossible, until it's done.

We are experts in real-time traffic analysis. Our speciality is the development of software for tactical conflict detection and resolution between moving objects – many, many, many objects.

Tactical means, that the software analyses traffic movements as they happen and checks for imminent conflicts or congestion. If conflicts are found, the relevant parties are immediately advised, and receive recommendations to resolve the situation

Being able to provide information in a timely fashion, improves safety, and supports traffic control and flow control.

Quick computing

To provide timely and useful information about traffic, it is essential to be able to look for conflicts quickly. Quickly means, an analysis must complete within milliseconds. Traffic moves. The situation changes continuously. Time is of the essence.

We have optimised our algorithms for speed. A typical traffic analysis containing a few hundred moving objects finishes in less than 20 ms.

Smart vehicles need smart infrastructure

Our concepts of traffic change. New kinds of traffic emerge: Electric cars are already on our roads. Auto-pilots driving cars are expected to be approved. Unmanned aircraft are a growing market.

How can these new kinds of traffic be reconciled with existing traffic?

Can smart infrastructure help to make smart vehicles even smarter?

To integrate new road or airspace users it is not sufficient to acknowledge their presence. Integration is an enduring and transforming exercise. But it is also a chance to improve traffic efficiency and safety. Traffic can be designed to support continuous improvement reflecting the needs of the urban population. Let's upgrade our cities!

Smart makes the difference

Smart traffic management can make the difference. Traffic management is not about displaying information. It is about making decisions that affect traffic. Decisions occur on many levels. Vehicles can enter into conversation with each other but also with local infrastructure, or with the wider urban infrastructure depending on the question at hand.

Aviation

It is the purpose of air traffic control to maintain separation between aircraft and to expedite the orderly flow of air traffic. To maintain a high level of safety while at the same time faced with increasingly denser traffic, air traffic control systems need to provide intelligent assistance.

Intelligent assistance means to be able to analyse the given air situation, and to provide useful information. Useful information is information appropriate to the given situation, presented at the right time, and to be perceived effortlessly.

To cast this intelligent assistance into software we look at air traffic management from the point of view of computing. We conduct research to develop algorithms and data representations specially suited to exploit the geometric aspects and dynamic nature of air traffic in real-time.

Drones

There is a growing market for drone services. In a few years it may be commonplace to hail a flying cab to get to the airport; or to have a drone deliver goods ordered on-line. In consequence, an increase in (drone) traffic density has to be expected.

An intelligent traffic management system can help guide the flow of traffic, and detect and resolve conflicts in time. Traffic jams are an inconvenience for automobiles. Drones can't afford to be in one for long due to their limited energy capacity.

Road traffic

Many systems already in place in cars offer intelligent assistance to drivers to make driving safer (and more enjoyable). A bird's-eye-view of traffic together with a few good queue management algorithms can reduce undue delay. Current traffic surveillance systems display information and collect statistics. But there is still a lot of untapped potential.

Our algorithms for conflict detection and resolution have been implemented in the ATM system component prototype CATo at DFS Deutsches Flugsicherung GmbH, the German air navigation service provider. The prototype has been validated twice, to find a mean increase in productivity of 20% while improving safety.

The Mission

We want to develop urban mobility, and think ahead.

We want mobility to be available to everyone: children or seniors; local people or tourists; Celtic or Rangers supporters. Traffic shall not discriminate.

We want traffic to be more efficient; traffic should never have to stop; it should flow.

We want urban mobility to reconcile many useful means of traffic; not be a one-of-a-kind monoculture.

We want available information to be presented when and where it is beneficial.

The Venture

Thinking the unthinkable since 2007.

Aerospace technology and information technology are key technologies of a global society. Yet where advanced IT is ubiqutous in our daily live, it is present in the air traffic domain to a significantly lesser extent. As innovator in ATM computing GLVI Gesellschaft für Luftverkehrsinformatik mbH, founded 2007, develops new and better algorithms for future generations of ATM systems.
